Using the Internet to Get More Clients for Your Practice

The internet is the perfect tool to grow any business. But as my father (who was a carpenter) would probably say, it’s not enough to have the tools; you need to know how to use them.

There are so many things you can do on the internet, it’s hard to know what you should do or where to even begin. Allow me to help.

For Christian counselors and psychology practices, the first thing you should do on the internet is the same thing virtually every business should do.

Create a website.

A website is your virtual place of business. Your storefront. Your digital address. It is the center that will anchor all the different pieces of your digital marketing efforts. For anyone who finds you on a search engine, social media, or miscellaneous business directories, your website will act as your first impression.

If you don’t have one, people will fail to make a connection with you and likely doubt your legitimacy. And this is why a website is an absolute must.

Maybe you already have a website. You’re off to a great start. But does it look nice? Is it mobile friendly? Does it represent what makes you unique? Does it tell potential clients how to get in contact with you?

In today’s fast paced, appearance driven digital world, it’s not enough to simply have a website. You need a quality one.

Start blogging.

If you really want to get the most out of your website, you need to be generating fresh, original content.  The most effective way to do this is with blogging. Blogging is a wonderful way for you to put your thoughts, knowledge, and perspective directly in front of internet users who are looking for what you have to offer.

Not sure what to write about? Simply write about the topics you deal with. Think about the questions your clients ask. The uncertainties they have. Write about these things.

By doing so, you’ll connect with people who are searching for the help that you provide. These posts don’t have to be anything fancy or lengthy. You’re not writing for a psychology journal or doctorate class. You’re writing to everyday people.

Now, some therapy “marketing” companies out there will offer things like access to “blog libraries”. These are filled with generic content that has been posted across hundreds, if not thousands of websites across the internet.

The only way a blog with truly benefit you is if the content is completely original. And the way it’s going to have the most impact is if it’s written in your voice.

Paid advertisements.

Paid ads can be a little tricky at first. There is definitely some trial and error involved as you decide what wording works best, who you should be targeting, and on what platforms you should be running ads.

But give it time, and you can see some serious return on investment. For a counseling practice, the best ad platforms are probably Google Adwords or Facebook ads, though you may find success in Instagram if you know what you’re doing.

The best way to start is to read some beginner’s guides online and trying it out.

Be strategic.

As with so many things in life, it’s best to start small and strategic. Focus on doing one or two things consistently, rather than jumping from marketing tool to marketing tool. Figure out what you’re the most comfortable with and what gets the best response.

Once you know what’s working, dig into that one thing, whether it’s regular blog writing or daily social posting. Do that well, and then when you’re ready, expand to something else.

Make sure you’re listed in the right places.

There are a lot of directories on the internet, and to be honest, most of them don’t matter. However, there are a few places where it’s very important to have your info listed correctly. For starters, Google. Google is far and away the most used search engine.
